Name: Silky Milk Foaming Lotion by Straight Request (Regular or Plus)

Description: A soft hold (or firm with Plus) foaming lotion which adds control to hair. Silky Milk Regular controls the dust you get from gels and sprays and works very well on roller sets, 2-strand twists sets, twist outs, and braid outs. Also good for wash-n-go but does not prevent shrinkage.

Ingredients: (still researching)

Cost: $15.95 for 16 oz

Where I buy: http://www.paynesbeautysupply.com

Tip: Do not dilute. Use a pump bottle to create foam for application (too runny otherwise). Add about 1 tbs of your favorite moisturizing oil to your ##oz pump bottle to give just a little extra sheen.

MK Verdict: All In! This is on our “tried and true” list of must have products. We have been using Silky Milk for years for the styles described above. It does not leave your hair hard (even the Plus formula) but it does define your sets and it is moisturizing. Just put a dollop on your fingers and rub. See how smooth it is!

Name: American Crew Pomade

Description: A hair pomade that gives your hair excellent hold, shine and control. Great for curly or straight hair. Great for slicking hair back.

Ingredients: Water (Aqua), PEG-25 Hydrogenated Castor Oil (Source: Castor Bean), Oleth-10, Lanolin, Oleth-20, Diisopropyl Dimer Dilinoleate, Glycerin (Source: Coconut Oil), Hydroxypropyl Bisstearyldimonium Chloride, Panax Ginseng Root Extract, Salvia Officinalis (Sage) Leaf Extract…

Cost: $15.99 for 3.53 oz

Where I buy: Publix Grocery Store (also at Target but $16.99)

Tip: A little goes a longggg way. Just take a dab on your fingers, rub with your palms, and apply to the edges and brush in. It still allows your waves to show but provides great hold and sheen.

MK Verdict: All In! This also in on our “tried and true” list of must have products. We had been using Alterna Hemp Pomade but it was costly and could only be found online for $19.99. Then we used Stylin Dredz by Soft Sheen Carson which has the same affect, was cheaper ($8.99), but can no longer be found or even ordered (issues with the manufacturer). So this is the best alternative and can be found almost anywhere!

Name: Eco Styler Olive Oil Gel

Description: An alcohol free styling gel that provides a perfect hold for natural hair . It has no color, no tack, and doesn’t  flake!

Ingredients: Water , Carbomer , Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein , PVP , Glycerin Triethanolamine , Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate , Polysorbate 20 , Tetrasodium EDTA , Fragrance…

Cost: $2.49 for 16oz

Where I buy: Sallys (but you can find it anywhere…and we mean anywhere)

Tip: I am heavy handed with product so I use globs and globs and it still doesn’t flake on me. But, I do moisturize my hair first before applying any gel (like a light oil)

MK Verdict: All In! Just like so many other reviews you’ve seen we love this gel also! Personally I like the Krystal better than the Olive Oil (for some reason the Olive Oil flakes on me and doesn’t hold as well). ~EbonyKnots

BlackButterfly prefers the Olive Oil. She says it has a shine to it and she feels like it moisturizes her hair at the same time while having a soft hold.

________________________________________________________________________

Name: Garnier Fructis Wonder Waves Cream Conditioner

Description: A rinse-out cream conditioner that moisturizes curly hair, enhances definition and shine and controls frizz.

Ingredients: Aqua/Water, Cetearyl Alcohol, Behentrimonium Chloride, Amodimethicone, Pyrus Malus Extract/Apple Fruit Extract, Parfum/Fragrance, Cetyl Esters, Methylparaben, Lauryl PEG/PPG-18/18 Methicone, Persea Gratissima… Oil/Avocado Oil

Cost: $4.99 for 25.4oz

Where I buy: Target (or just about any drug store or grocery store)

Tip: Apply from root to tip after hair is fully saturated with water. Leave on for a few minutes to for the detangling magic to begin. Also, only use this as a rinse-out conditioner, not a leave in. Leaving it in leaves the hair pasty and chalky looking.

I started buying the Wonder Waves formula because it became hard to find the Hydra Curl and the Wonder Waves came in the large bottle whereas the Hydra Curl never did.

MK Verdict: ½ In! I use this regularly! It is one of my favorite conditioners and I have been trying a lot here lately. It does great at detangling, moisturizing, and providing “slip” and it is inexpensive to boot! ~EbonyKnots

Name: Fantasia IC Shea Butter Oil Moisturizer

Where I buy: Any beauty supply store carrying the Fantasia IC product line.

Tip: Use as a moisturizer before blow drying or braiding (cornrows). Just take a dab, rub in the palm of your hand, and apply sparingly through your hair. As you blow dry it will spread.

MK Verdict: All In! While this product may have some “no no” ingredients such as mineral oil and petrolatum it provides a good moisturizing barrier when blow drying hair or doing cornrows. It smells absolutely awesome and is not heavy at all.

Name: Chocolate Soy Milk Shampoo by Healthy Sexy Hair

Description: A sulfate-free color-safe cleansing shampoo

Ingredients: Water, disodium laureth sulfosuccinate, ammonium cocoyl isethionate, cocamidopropyl betaine, disodium cocamphodiacetate, PEG-120 methyl glucose dioleate, cocamide MEA, soy amino acids, hydrolyzed soy protein, polyquaternium-44…

Cost: $4.99 for 13.5 oz

Where I buy: TJ Maxx (also sold at JCPenney salons and online)

Tip: While this product is sulfate-free it does have a very nice, rich lather. A little goes a long way. As with most shampoos I try to wash mainly my scalp and not the rest of my hair.

MK Verdict: In/Out? I have tried this product and it smells absolutely heavenly! My entire bathroom and head smelled like chocolate! This shampoo worked very well and I was surprised at the lather. It seemed to strip just a little bit but I am not sure if I should attribute that to the shampoo or the Palmer’s Deep Conditioner I had done right before (which I hated, see below). So I will try again and let you know. ~EbonyKnots

Cost: $4.29 for 12 oz

Where I buy: Sallys

Tip: No tips yet, still in the laboratory.

MK Verdict: In/Out? Both of us have tried just a little bit of it and definitely like how it feels, the slip, and the really soft hold it has. We both want to try it in some styles like twists, wash-n-go, etc. We will update the rating when we know more.

Name: Direct Leave-In Conditioner by Giovanni Organic Hair Care

Ingredients: Aqua (purified water) , Rosemary (Rosmarinus Officinalis) oil, Nettle (Uritica Dioica) Oil, Thyme (Thymus Vulagris) Oil, Birch Leaf (Butela Alba) Oil, Chamomile (Anthemis Nobilus Flower) Oil, Clary (Salvia Sclarea), Lavender (Lavandula Angustifolia), Coltsfoot Leaf (Tussilago Farfara), Yarrow (Achillea Millefolium) Oil…
Cost: $4.99 for 8.5 oz

Where I buy: TJ Maxx ($8.99 for same size at Publix Grocery store, Ulta 3 and Amazon carry it as well)

Tip: Apply when hair is wet and while a little goes a long way, don’t be scared to use it! Don’t think you are adding too much if it is initially white on your hair. It will soak in and dry. It worked great on a twist out I did and didn’t take an extremely long time to dry. It left my twist out soft but defined.

MK Verdict: All In! I have tried this and absolutely love it! It is now on my “tried and true must have” list. It smells absolutely wonderful (I could smell it all throughout the night while I slept). ~EbonyKnots

________________________________________________________________________

Name: Elasta QP Mango Butter Moisturizer

Description: A daily moisturizing, intensely rich, thermal protecting treatment. The Olive and coconut oils target dry ends and help prevent damage.

Ingredients: Aqua(purified water), squalane(olive oil derived), caprylic/capric triglyceride(coconut oil derived), peg-75 lanolin, behntrimonium methosulfate, hexadecanol, cetearyl alcohol, ceterareth-20, dimethicone, phenyl trimethicone, mangifera indica (MANG0) seed butter…

Cost: $4.99 for 4.6oz

Where I buy: Any beauty supply store that carries the FULL line of Elasta QP products (Sallys doesn’t have everything that Elasta QP makes so they didn’t have this. I found it at an Asian beauty supply store that carries it all :)

Tip: Use as a daily moisturizer for any style including dry twists outs. I want to get in the laboratory and experiment a little bit more with using it as a setting lotion so I will update this when done.

MK Verdict: ½ In! I have tried this and as a moisturizer I love it (it’s not greasy at all). First let me say that it is the best smelling product I have ever stuck my nose in. I used it for a dry twist out and love the definition, sheen and softness. ~EbonyKnots

________________________________________________________________________

Name: Carol’s Daughter Loc Butter

Description: A styling aid used for rolling and twisting while providing a desirable hold and a satin sheen.

Ingredients: Zea Mays (Corn) Oil, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil, Beeswax, Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Essential Oils of Tangerine, Lime and Pink Grapefruit, Annatto…

Cost: $15.50 for 8oz

Where I buy: Macys

Tip: Use a very, very, very little amount to provide sheen while releasing a finger coil do.

MK Verdict: All Out! I used this on BlackButterfly for a rod set. After applying just a bit along with a setting lotion and sitting her under the dryer her hair was very, very, very oily and limp. Limp to the point where she had to wash it and start over. I used a tad on my hair for a twist out and it didn’t provide the hold that I was looking for. However, I think it might work better as a moisturizer or sheen when pulling out coils from a finger coil style.

Name: Carol’s Daughter Tui Leave-In Conditioning Spray

Description: Hydrating leave in conditioning refresher spray for normal to dry hair.

Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Glycerin, Polysorbate 80, Pantehnol (Pro vitam B5), Sodium Hyaluronate, Sodium PCS, Butylene Glycol, Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Flower/Leaf Stem, Salvia Officinalis (Sage) Leaf Extract…

Cost: $11.50 for 8oz

Where I buy: Macys

Tip: Use as a hair perfume to provide a nice light scent.

MK Verdict: ½ Out! I have tried this product because I was looking for a nice leave in conditioner. This product did not provide any detangling benefits as I read that it would; however, it does smell great. But it costs a bit too much just to be used as a hair perfume.

________________________________________________________________________

Name: Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk

Description: Light weight styler that provides frizz free shine

Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Glycine Soja(Soybean) Oil, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Emulsifying Wax Nf, Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Prunus Armeniaca (Apricot) Kernel Oil, Beeswax, Essential Oil of Lemongrass, Fragrance (Parfum)…

Cost: $12.00 4oz

Where I buy: Macys

Tip: None

MK Verdict: ½ Out! I was soooo excited to get this hair milk and use it for a 2-strand twist set. NOT. It just sits on my hair, doesn’t penetrate, and left it greasy but not set and no definition. I will not be purchasing this ever again. ~EbonyKnots

In/Out? It was cool on my hair. I can’t really remember what style my hair was in but it was cool. ~BlackButterfly

________________________________________________________________________

Name: Carol’s Daughter Tui Hair Oil

Cost: $8.50 2oz

Where I buy: Macys

Tip: It is very light weight so it can be used weekly to provide moisture and sheen.

MK Verdict: All In! We love the scent of this and maybe that’s why I bought the larger size. I do use it to mix in with my Silky Milk setting lotion and will probably use it mix in with my shea butter. I guess I am still in the laboratory on this as I want to try it as a hot oil treatment as well. For the smell alone I will continue to purchase it. ~EbonyKnots & BlackButterfly

Name: Carol’s Daughter Black Vanilla Hair Smoothie

Description: Rinse out cream conditioner

Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Cetearyl Alcohol, Glycerin, Amodimethicone, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed oil, Brassicamidopropyl Dimethylamine, Olea Europaea (Olive)Fruit Oil, Peg-40 Castor Oil, Prunus Amygdalys Dulcis (Sweet Almond)Oil, Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) germ Oil…

Cost: $19.00 8oz

Where I buy: Macys

Tip: Use as a rinse out conditioner only.

MK Verdict: ½ In! Well kinda “In”. I absolutely love the smell, the application, and the detangling properties of this conditioner, but the price for the quantity is outrageous. I have a lot of hair and use ½ jar each time I condition. I condition way too often to use this product regularly. Oh well! If I find it somewhere else cheaper (doubtful) I will definitely let you know.~EbonyKnots

Name: Carol’s Daughter Rosemary Mint Shampoo with Sea Moss

Description: Deep cleansing shampoo that restores manageability and shine while transforming tresses to their natural state

Ingredients: Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Extract, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Extract, Rosa Centifolia Flower Extract, Salvia Officinalis (Sage) Leaf Extract, Urtica Dioica (Nettle) Extract, Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract, Delphinium Consolida Flower Extract, Trifolium Pratense (Clover) Extract, Saponified Organic Oils of Coconut, Olive and Jojoba…

Cost: $12.50 for 8oz

Where I buy: Macys

Tip: None

MK Verdict: ½ Out! The first time I purchased this shampoo I was initially hooked because of the lather and the tingling of my scalp. And while I realized that my hair felt funny and hard (which I now know was a stripped feeling) I bought another bottle. The second bottle was runnier in consistency than the first. Anyway, used it and realized that it was stripping my hair, tangling my hair, and just made my hair feel like crap. So I used the rest to wash my combs and brushes. It did not “restore manageability and shine”. In fact it did the exact opposite. ~BessiesBumpnCurl

Name: Carol’s Daughter Black Vanilla Leave In Conditioner

Description: Hydrating leave in conditioning refresher spray for normal to dry hair.

Ingredients: Rosa Centifolia Flower Extract, Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Extract, Urtica Dioica (Nettle) Extract, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Extract, Trifolium Pratense (Clover) Extract, Salvia Officinalis (Sage) Leaf Extract, Water (Aqua), Ceteth-20, Cetrimonium Chloride…

Cost: $11.50 for 8oz

Where I buy: Carols Daughter Store

Tip: None.

MK Verdict In/Out? I don’t use this product that much. But I absolutely love the smell of it. I applied it to wet hair after a wash and conditioner. At the end of the day my hair was dry. I need moisture! I do not feel like it can be used solely alone. It is not heavy enough. It is basically something to make your hair smell good and add a little moisture. ~Black Butterfly

Ingredients: Zea Mays (Corn) Oil, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender), Salvia Officinalis (Sage) Leaf,Trifolium Pratense (Red Clover), Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary), Rosa Damascena (Rose-petal Red), Malva Moschata (Malva-Blue), Urtica Diocia (Nettle), Beeswax, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter) Fruit…

Cost: $9.50 for 4oz

Where I buy: Macys

Tip: None.

MK Verdict: In/Out? on this one because I have not used it that much. I like the consistency of it because it is light and it smells great. I will probably use it as a hair dress (which it is) if I need some shine or moisture with a nice scent. It has a soft hold.

________________________________________________________________________

Name: Carol’s Daughter Kizzi “Stay Put” Hair Pomade

Description: Soft hold pomade

Ingredients: (still researching)

Cost: $9.50 for 2oz

Where I buy: Macys

Tip: Use on edges when corn rowing to provide some moisture.

MK Verdict: ½ Out! I tried this and it did not have any hold at all, not even a soft one. Of course for the price I used the rest of it. It worked well as a moisturizer when doing cornrows and it smells nice. ~EbonyKnots

Name: Nature’s Gate Aloe Vera Moisturizing Shampoo (for Normal to Dry Hair)

Description: Paraben and alcohol-free shampoo that gently cleanses hair while helping to restore moisture

Ingredients: Water, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Cocamide DEA, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Leaf Juice, Hordeum Distichon (Barley) Extract, Urtica Dioica (Nettle) Extract, Coffea Arabica (Coffee) Seed Extract, Viola Tricolor (Wild Pansy) Extract, Tocopheryl Acetate…

Cost: $6.29 18oz (got it on sale for $4.99)

Where I buy: Wholefoods (I have seen it at a couple of health food stores and Kroger as well)

Tip: Use to clean your combs and brushes as the lather will really free them of any product build up, especially your brushes.

MK Verdict: ½ Out! This shampoo totally stripped my hair. It has a lot of lather when using just a small amount, but then it should since sulfate is the 2nd ingredient on the list. I will never purchase again. ~ EbonyKnots

Name: Nature’s Gate Aloe Vera Moisturizing Conditioner (for Normal to Dry Hair)

Description: A rinse-out conditioner that conditions hair while helping to restore moisture.

Ingredients: Water, Cetyl Alcohol, Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Leaf Juice, Hordeum Distichon (Barley) Extract, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract, Panthenol, Coffea Arabica (Coffee) Seed Extract, Viola Tricolor (Wild Pansy) Extract, Sesamum Indicum (Sesame) Seed Oil, Tocopherol…

Cost: $6.29 18oz (got it on sale for $4.99)

Where I buy: Wholefoods (I have seen it at a couple of health food stores and Kroger as well)

Tip: None

MK Verdict: ½ Out! Never again. First the shampoo boasts of not having alcohol in it but the conditioner has alcohol as its 2nd ingredient. This smelled nice but did nothing to aid in providing moisture nor detangling. I had to rinse out and then apply my Garnier Wonder Waves conditioner just so I could detangle my hair! ~EbonyKnots

Name: Palmers Coconut Oil Formula w/ Vitamin E Deep Conditioning Pack

Description: Deep conditioning protein pack that restores and replenishes severely damaged hair. Made with pure coconut milk and coconut oil.

Ingredients: Water, stearyl alcohol, stearalkonium chloride, cyclopentasiloxane, cyclohexasileoxane, stearamidopropyl, dimetylamine, peg-40 stearate, cetyl alcohol, butylene glycol…

Cost: $1.49 for 1 pack (60g)

Where I buy: Asian beauty supply store ( I think Wal Mart has it as well)

Tip: Use with heat cap for 15-20 minutes.

MK Verdict: ½ Out! Oh heck no!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now let me first start by saying I do not think my hair is protein sensitive. I have used other protein boosting treatments, etc and did not have the results I had with this. This conditioner left my hair so extremely dry when it was wet! Crazy!!! I had never had any conditioner, even the worst of them, leave my hair stripped feeling. The coconut milk and oil are supposed to be in the product to restore the moisture. Deep conditioned? NOT. ~EbonyKnots

Name: Hindu Sheen 5 Minute Curl Set

Description: A concentrated 5 minute quick curl set and wave lotion

Ingredients: Deionized Water, Mineral Oil, PEG 40, Castor Oil, Stearalkonium Chloride, Cetyl Alcohol, Vitamin E, Aloe, Methyl Paraben, Propyl Paraben…

Cost: $3.29 for 8oz

Where I buy: Asian beauty supply store

Tip: The instructions say you can dilute with water. I would only do that if I was applying to wet hair. Otherwise don’t dilute, just apply a dime sized amount to medium sections of hair and twist, braid, or roller set.

MK Verdict: In/Out? In all honesty I bought this product while looking for another one which you may remember, Miss Cool’s 5 Minute Fast Setting Lotion. Apparently they discontinued this product (which I loved) and I have been on a search for a replacement ever since. I used this once on dry hair for a twist out but I used it along with another product so I am not sure which one of them was responsible for my “quick set”. Back to the laboratory on this one. ~EbonyKnots

Name: Kinky Curly Curling Custard

Description: A moisturizing and curl-defining styling product.

Ingredients: Botanical infusion of Water, Horsetail, Chamomile, Nettle and Marshmallow, Organic Aloe Vera Juice, Agave Nectar Extract, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Pectin, Citric Acid, Potassium Sorbate and Natural Fragrance…

Cost: $29.99 for 16oz

Where I buy: Wholefoods

Tip: Use when hair is soaking wet and you have applied a leave in conditioner first (KC Knot Today is recommended). Finger it though instead of combing it through and make sure hair is fully saturated. It does take about 9-10 hours to dry.

MK Verdict: In/Out? I tried this using my Infusium Leave In 23 for my leave in instead of the Knot Today (the store was out when I went). It did define my curls and greatly reduced my shrinkage; however, I also looked like a wet noodle. The next day it looked a little bit better but not much. I will be going to the laboratory on this one to try it with some different styles. I will let you know the results. ~EbonyKnots

Tip: Use when hair is soaking wet and apply with shingling method (comb product through hair versus finger style).

MK Verdict: In/Out? I used this and it flaked after the 2nd day. Maybe it has to be used along with the Buttercreme in order to not flake. But for the price I need this product to be all-in-one. I will not be purchasing again just because I don’t have enough funds to play around that much. ~EbonyKnots

MK Verdict: ½ In! I really liked this shampoo; however, it required too much in order to get full coverage of my scalp. Additionally it costs too much for the amount that has to be used and it is not easy to get. But it does smell nice and left my scalp feeling clean and not dried out. ~EbonyKnots

I used it on my hair and it made it feel so soft and moisturized without a greasy feeling. However, as I may have stated before I am heavy handed with product application so I used so much until it was running down my face. But low and behold it made my skin soooo soft! Tip: Use along with one of Darcy’s leave-in conditioners. Hair needs to be saturated.

MK Verdict: ½ In! Love the smell of this product. I tried this out becuase of the description and the price. I was looking for something like KCCC. It has a consistency sort of like KCCC but lighter and not as sticky. The hold is a soft hold. I found that using the Peach Nectar leave-in conditioner under it gave it a lot of moisture. My hair is thick so I used a pretty good amount of it to make it look like KCCC.
